SARAM (kor. 사람) is the korean word for human.
Our aspiration is to support mankind in North Korea.
Helping people inside the borders of North Korea is considered as almost impossible. But it is not.
But first things first: Those who manage to escape from North Korea, are stuck in China and has to go into hiding there. An escape directly towards South Korea is impossible. North Korean defectors have no chance to get a resident permit or political asylum in China. Whoever is discovered by Chinese authorities (or North Korean agents), is threatened by immediate deportation – back to North Korea.
In most cases this means: torture, labor camps, or even execution. Often for the entire family, as kinship liability in North Korea applies over three generations. It is simply unknown how many people are currently hiding under these circumstances in China. Estimations vary between 20,000 to 300,000 refugees.
So far, only a few were lucky enough to escape North Korea with the help of a smuggler, 26,000 North Koreans hade made it to South Korea. We want to help them getting more and more.
To date, there is almost no committment within the german population to act against this unimaginable suffering. Often we heard that Korea is just not geographically a neighbouring country and there would be enough to deal with in Europe. That is true. But there is still a connection between Korea and Germany on several levels, which particularly takes Germany to account. So it did not surprise us when a South Korean, who just moved to Germany, joined our team because of these reasons. He would like to learn especially about the german reunification – for the hopefully not too far away reunification of the korean penisula.
The team of Saram e.V.:
Our team could hardly be any more different. We were all independently searching for ways to improve the situation for people from within and outside of Northkorea. None of us found a truley reasonable way to do that, so we needed something completely new – and here we are!
We are always looking for additional support, if you want to engage yourself with Saram e.V. please send us a message via our contact form.
